So here we go.. More snow. 14 inches perhaps by Monday evening? Sigh.. Over it.
I have Iphone, it is great!
Nothing new to report.
More to come.
I was reading the latest edition of Scientific America recently and came across this excerpt in a article about human hairless evolution called the Naked Truth by Nina Jablonski
“….Tightly curled hair provides the optimum head covering in this regard, because it increases the thickness of the space between the surface of the hair and the scalp, allowing air to blow through. Much remains to be discovered about the evolution of human head hair, but it is possibly that tightly curled hair was the original condition in modern humans and that other hair types evolved as humans dispersed out of tropical Africa.”
What Science Says About Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
In its final report on the safety of sodium lauryl sulfate, the Journal of the American College of Toxicology notes that this ingredient has a “degenerative effect on the cell membranes because of its protein denaturing properties.” What’s more, the journal adds, “high levels of skin penetration may occur at even low use concentration.”
Interestingly, sodium lauryl sulfate “is used around the world in clinical studies as a skin irritant,” notes the journal. The publication expressed additional concerns:
Substitution of Gentler Detergents Poses Additional Risks
Unfortunately, many of the gentler detergents that may be substituted for sodium lauryl sulfate pose their own health hazards. For example, many companies have begun to use ethoxylated detergents such as sodium laureth sulfate, cocamide DEA or lauramide DEA because they tend to be less irritating.
Consumers can recognize shampoo ingredients containing ethoxylated detergents and related ingredients by looking for the prefix, word, or syllable PEG, polyethylene, polyethylene glycol, polyoxyethylene, eth (as in sodium laureth sulfate), or oxynol.
Both our own commissioned independent laboratory testing and that of the federal government have documented ethoxylated alcohol compounds are frequently contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which is carcinogenic and is listed by the federal government as a probable human carcinogen.
Also, according to a 1998 report from the federal National Toxicology Program, two DEA-based compounds‹cocamide DEA and lauramide DEA‹have been demonstrated to be cancer-causing in at least in one species of animal.
Today was a beautiful bright sunny day in Boston. I arrive at the salon around 10am to find we had no power due to an electrical transformer explosion earlier that morning in the middle and under the street where the NStar power company were already present trying to repair the problem down in the manhole. The police had already closed down three blocks of Tremont St.
Jenny and I immediately took the salon computer next door to the mortgage company which miraculously had power. We cancelled our morning and I kept a few clients on, who I knew would not worry about NOT getting blow-dry’s and of course also that the hot water would soon run out. I began cutting hair outside along with Angela and Jenny and was in the middle of my third haircut when all of a sudden smoke began billowing out from what appeared to be the basement apartment right below the salon.
I yelled across to the police men standing in the street that there was a fire and in 5 mins firemen where there breaking down the next-door basement door and the vacant businesses door as well. A pungent white smoke was coming out more heaviliy so I moved my styling chair closer to the corner and continued to cut hair while a Boston Herald photographer snapped photos of the firemen pulling in large water hoses and putting out the electrical fire. I later found out that the entire buildings electrical panel in the basement had melted and had caught on fire. Apparently a large electrical power surge had come down the lines into the neighboring building.
We did end up canceling the remainder of the day, but we hope there will be power back tomorrow.

Our 8 year old beautiful Great Dane Pru was taken to the emergency vet hospital locally last night around 8pm, with the help of a great friend we were able to carry her in a blanket to the car. I came home after work (Jay was away for business) and she was unable to lift her self to stand. We were told about 10 months ago that she had hip dysplasia and that this day would come, but not this soon.
After a series of tests to rule out possible causes it is most likely to be Wobblers Disease. which is malformation of the vertebrae near or at the neck and affects the spinal column, thus restricting nerves and causing neurological problems. There is a test to determine if in fact it is Wobblers, but that test is $2000 and if it was determined to be Wobblers, the surgery would be an additional $6000 or more. She is currently comfortable resting and has been receiving medication all day as well as steroids to reduce the inflammation and swelling.
We are torn up with sadness and very hurt with this sudden decline in her health, but given her age, the further monetary obligation, and our home being on the 5th floor we will most likely need to let her go.
Jay will arrive home sometime tomorrow and will go right to the hospital to see her for a few hours and we will decide what is best for her.
Thank you and Pru thanks you for all your love over the years. We LOVE HER VERY MUCH and will miss her oh so much! I know everyone says this- but she is a very sweet and wonderful dog.

added July 11th: Jays facebook status: ”At 6:55 pm we said goodbye to our best girl as she slipped quietly and peacefully away in my arms. We will never forget your Pru. You were our heart.” Here is a link to a slide show Jay made.

I wanted to share this with everyone today. From another blog site about my favorite product line and method of cutting from a devoted fan of Deva Curl!
from chia to curvaceous curl: curly hair quest part 4: devacurl! from Felicia Sullivan on Vimeo.
Follow the Deva 3-Step:
•Step 1: Give your curls a “suds-free” cleanse with DevaCurl NoPoo Cleanser. Forget those lather-producing detergents that dry out curls! No-Poo uses gentle botanical cleansers, providing healthy, frizz-free, lustrous curls. This cleanser is 100% sulfate-free (more about sulfates here, here, and here), and provides maximum cleansing and hydration while maintaining the moisture balance in the hair and scalp – critical for me as I often have flake issues.
•Step 2: Hydrate with DevaCurl One Conditioner. This ultra-creamy conditioner keeps curls shiny and manageable all day while providing maximum hydration for all curl types.
•Step 3: Style with DevaCurl Angell.a lightweight, moisturizing curl-defining gel for maximum frizz prevention that holds without feeling stiff or sticky.
UPDATE: My brilliant curly-haired pal, Lauren of Second City Style, gave me the following additional tips: stop drying your hair with a towel as that is adding to the frizz. Squeeze dry with paper towels instead. Also, she insisted that I use the Set It Free product after AnGell so I can maintain shine and no-frizz. She also says that in between washes, you can freshen up your scalp with Mist-er Right.
And I’ve just learned about this rockstar contest for curly-haired gals! The very lucky grand prize winner will win a trip to New York City for a two-night stay and one day of total beauty at the Devachan Salon and Departure Lounge. The original curly girl herself, Deva co-founder Lorraine Massey, will tend to the winner’s tresses – as part of a photo shoot for Lorraine’s new book on curly hair. Yes, it is true, we are going to see Michael Jackson live in London for a show in late August. We are still looking for places to stay, but looking at staying in Trafalgar Square. Please dont hesitate to send recomendations on some sights we should see.

I certainly wish it would be! Yet another birthday went by without too much fanfare, a simple, yet artistic brunch at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston with some friends, then Jenny and Rich’s Superbowl party in Quincy. I found my self watching it. I Love the Franz Ferdinand album a lot, wishing I didn’t miss them when there were here in Boston back in December. Got my Morrissey tickets already for late March or early April, can’t recall at the moment which date it is. His new album should be out around the sixteenth. Bowie is also said to be working on new material, which is quite exciting for us fans.
Flying over snowy fields right now on my way to St. Louis for another work trip. It looks like I am still in the black for this trip, I have been running the numbers in detail while waiting to board. I am going to start booking smarter and in tighter blocks on my calender to maximize my time there.
Not that I am a big proponent of making New Yeas resolutions, but I am going to try my best to get in the gym or a pool this year, as I am feeling worn down more than usual it seems these days. I do work allot and work late, which is good of course that I am busy. I also want to save to do some travel towards the end of the year. It is time we went to London or something out of the Continental United States. I also want to get some intensive Goldwell color education by traveling to Baltimore to their training facility. Of course finally finding out about weather or not I will be indeed teaching for Deva Curl at some point this year.
This is my favorite You Tube video currently–
Some things that disappoint me creatively:
Jennifer Saunders is heading up the production and the remake of her famous series Absolutely Fabulous for the American audience, I believe to air on FOX. BLAH. Simply not a good idea.
The remake of the Rocky Horror Picture show by MTV pictures is being made…SIGH. Unholy I tell ya, some things should just be left alone.
Grey Gardens the Movie? WTF? The original documentary is wonderful.
If indeed you read these blog posts, please let me know by leaving a comment, also please sign up to receive a notice when I post.
Look out for a NEW Oneshan website coming later this year. This site will be easier for me to update content and should be allot more fun, user friendly and would hopefully have items and content that would keep you coming back.
