Deva Curl on use of Amodimethicone

Hello Everyone,

I’m Shari Harbinger, Director of Education for DevaCurl, and I am here to set the record straight for those of you who have questioned the ingredients and performance of our brand.

DevaCurl was the first company ever to launch a sulfate free brand dedicated to the curly consumer. However, it is not enough to use a product that is sulfate free. That is just the beginning! We were also the first company ever, in spite of industry ridicule, who went above and beyond the call of ” Curl” duty and replaced synthetic detergents and synthetic ingredients with botanically derived ingredients that cleanse and moisturize curly hair. It was an expensive endeavor, but somebody had to do it.We did indeed set the new industry standard and you have all benefited from our efforts. The result? Softer, shinier, healthier, frizz free curls. We found a way to clean and condition the curls without disturbing the hair and scalp’s natural moisture balance. That is how we have become YOUR PREMIER CURLY HAIR EXPERTS!

Deva removed the detergent, ( SLS) , the plastics, resins and numerous synthetic agents, most of which weigh the hair down and repel moisture rather than recover the hairs own natural moisture level.

I would like to respond to the question surrounding cones. Any trace amount of a cone that was previously in Deva, has been removed. The reason it was there in the first place, was becuase we were unable to find a botanical replacement. However, I am happy to report that as of January 1st, 2009, DevaCurl is silicone free, paraben free, plastic free, resin free, sulfate free, botanically drenched and considered vegan. We have never tested on animals and we will never test on animals.

**Please note that by law, we have permission to finish any unused labels from 2008, but rest assured, any product that was filled in 2009, even with 2008 labels stands by our promise.

I look forward to your feedback and continued discussions! Enjoy your Deva!

Shari Harbinger
Director of Deva Curl Education.

All About No-Poo

posted by admin 12:46 PM
Friday, February 12, 2010

Some of your clients—especially those with textured hair—may have expressed a desire to avoid sulfates, an ingredient common in shampoos, as part of a popular philosophy that suggests sulfates are harmful to the hair, and dangerous to the body and to the environment.

There is much debate as to the legitimacy of this argument, with prominent hair care experts coming down on both sides of the “no-poo” debate.

Many prominent hair care experts agree with this philosophy, saying that using shampoos that contain sulfates dries and damages the hair.

“Squeaky clean is a myth,” says Chaz Dean, celebrity stylist and founder of Wen Hair & Body Care products and Chaz Dean Studio in Hollywood, Calif. “People thought squeaky clean meant clean hair, but squeaky clean really equals stripped and dried-out hair.” How does this happen? Sulfates create a dense lather that strips away sebum, the oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands that prevent your hair from drying out. You’ll find sulfates in many cleaning products—ranging from car cleaners to laundry and dishwashing detergents to shower gels and toothpaste. And, of course, shampoo.

“By cleansing your scalp [with sulfates] you’re robbing it of all the natural, essential oils and beneficial bacteria; you killed them and washed them down the drain,” says Dean, who launched zero-lather cleansing conditioners in the mid-1990s. “The bad and harmful bacteria replenish at a much more rapid pace than the beneficial ones. So, you open yourself up to a dry, flaky and sensitive scalp and psoriasis because you stripped the beneficial bacteria and left a minefield open for the bad bacteria to have a field day.”

Additionally, sulfates are known to cause gastrointestinal issues in people as well as lung irritation, so runoff from our showers and shampoo bowls possibly entering our environment is not a good thing, say those in the no-sulfates camp.

Many curlyheads have embraced the no-poo philosophy and avoid hair cleansers that contain any of a number of sulfates, including sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, sodium myreth sulfate and others.

Instead of using products containing these detergents, curlies who embrace the “no-poo” method will often cleanse their hair with conditioner only. Some will use a brown-sugar scrub, and others might choose a “shampoo” with less-harsh cleansing ingredients, including coco betaine or sodium cocoyl isethionate.

Most conditioners contain mild surfactants that, paired up with a little manual friction, are capable of lifting off dirt, debris and excess oil from our scalp and hair. If a little extra help is required, an apple cider vinegar rinse can clarify the curls.

If a curly chooses to avoid sulfates, she must also avoid products containing non-water-soluble ingredients such as silicone, as a sulfate is generally required to wash those ingredients out.

This has lead many curlies to avoid products containing silicones, as well as those containing sulfates. As a result, many curly consumers have become very educated about product ingredients.

Several manufacturers have touted the benefits of no-pooing for some time, including DevaConcepts and Wen. And many other manufacturers have more recently recognized the benefits of developing sulfate-free products for their customers.

Still other industry experts say using sulfates in moderation is fine and indeed necessary to thoroughly clean hair.

Shampoo is critical to cleansing the pores of the scalp and allowing the roots of your hair to breathe, according to Ouidad, author of “CurlTalk” and owner of New York’s Ouidad Salon, the Curl Education Center.

Jonathan Torch of Toronto’s Curly Hair Institute agrees: “The word ’sulfate’ has become part of a marketing scare, and there’s a lot of propaganda.”

“You can’t just look at that one ingredient. I would never use anything that would irritate the scalp. When people say they have an itchy scalp, they’re not rinsing out the shampoo properly. You have to spend a lot of time getting the water all the way down to the root. I haven’t found anything better or that remotely comes close to [sulfates].”

“There may be a product with one drop of sulfate and 20 drops of silk amino acids to counteract anything that could happen from that one drop.” Torch says. “Concentration is important. Quality is important. All these things play into it. So, it’s an art and it’s a science.”

Some curlies opt for an in-between method, where they shampoo weekly or every other week, and do a conditioner-only cleaning in between.

The good news is that you and your clients have plenty of options!

Cutting hair while fire is being put out next doorToday was a beautiful bright sunny day in Boston. I arrive at the salon around 10am to find we had no power due to an electrical transformer explosion earlier that morning in the middle and under the street where the NStar power company were already present trying to repair the problem down in the manhole. The police had already closed down three blocks of Tremont St.

Jenny and I immediately took the salon computer next door to the mortgage company which miraculously had power. We cancelled our morning and I kept a few clients on, who I knew would not worry about NOT getting blow-dry’s and of course also that the hot water would soon run out. I began cutting hair outside along with Angela and Jenny and was in the middle of my third haircut when all of a sudden smoke began billowing out from what appeared to be the basement apartment right below the salon.

I yelled across to the police men standing in the street that there was a fire and in 5 mins firemen where there breaking down the next-door basement door and the vacant businesses door as well. A pungent white smoke was coming out more heaviliy so I moved my styling chair closer to the corner and continued to cut hair while a Boston Herald photographer snapped photos of the firemen pulling in large water hoses and putting out the electrical fire. I later found out that the entire buildings electrical panel in the basement had melted and had caught on fire. Apparently a large electrical power surge had come down the lines into the neighboring building.

We did end up canceling the remainder of the day, but we hope there will be power back tomorrow.

If this incredient is in your Conditioner — throw it out… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclopentasiloxane

Cyclopentasiloxane is a silicone fluid commonly used in cosmetics such as deodorants, sunblocks, hair sprays and skin care products. It is becoming more common in hair conditioners, as it makes the hair easier to brush without breakage. It is also used as part of silicone based personal lubricants. It can be found in other cosmetics such as sunless tanning lotion and underarm deodorants. Cyclopentasiloxane is an emollient.

Friday was beautiful.. Outside coloring

Friday was beautiful.. Outside coloring

Look how much fun was it on Friday. I decided to take the salon chair outside for an afternoon color and haircut. It was great to see the how the passerby’s reacted and a few even stopped to chat. One I recall said as she passed “why not?”  It was so warm and refreshing to have the sun beating down while doing hair.  I may have to do this again soon.

PS- See my moped in the background? Jay and I took them out all that evening after work. We ended up at the Buttery where we learned and saw them setting up to start filming a new Movie with Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones and Kevin Costner. Then off to Somerville for a lovely birthday party.  It is weather like this that makes Boston fun.
